Finding the right mental health practitioner can feel overwhelming. There are many types of professionals, approaches and factors to consider. This guide walks you through the key decisions.
Which kind of professional?
The distinction matters. A therapist or counsellor helps you make sense of how you feel and where it comes from. A coach helps you act on a goal you have chosen.
The BACP, a UK body for counsellors, says coaching is about growth, not repair. It does not treat a mental health condition. A hypnotherapist uses deep relaxation to try to change a habit or a way of thinking.
Our guide to therapy, coaching or hypnotherapy sets the three side by side.
What to look for
When evaluating a practitioner, consider:
- Qualifications and accreditation - are they registered with a professional body?
- Specialisation - do they have experience with your specific concerns?
- Approach - does their therapeutic modality match your preferences?
- Practical factors - availability, location, language and fees
Your first session
Many practitioners offer an initial consultation to help you both decide if the fit is right. This is your opportunity to ask questions and see how comfortable you feel.
If it does not feel right
Finding the right practitioner sometimes takes more than one try. It is perfectly normal to switch if the relationship is not working. What matters is that you feel heard and supported.
