# When Everyone Relies on You

For the man everyone leans on: at work, at home and in the family. Asking for help does not mean you stop being the one people count on.

## The one who *copes*

Some men are the person everyone calls. He is the manager the team turns to, the son who sorts out his parents and the partner at home.

Being relied on can feel good. It can also mean nobody asks how you are, because you always seem fine.

Over time the role can leave no room for your own worries. They do not go away. They wait.

## What it can look like

It rarely arrives as a single bad day. More often it shows up sideways.

- You are short with the people you are doing it all for.
- You sleep badly, or wake early with a list running.
- You drink a bit more to switch off in the evening.
- You feel flat about things that used to matter.
- You keep busy so you do not have to think.

None of these is a diagnosis. They are signs that you are carrying a lot with nowhere to set it down.

## Why it is hard to *ask*

When you are the one others lean on, asking for help can feel like letting them down. It can feel as if the whole thing might wobble if you stop holding it.

Many men also have nobody to tell. Friends see you as the steady one, and family already has enough on.

A professional sits outside all of that. They do not need anything from you, and you do not have to protect them from what you say.

Something else can hold the gate for a while.

## An hour that is *yours*

Talking to a professional does not mean stepping down from anything. You can keep every role you have and still have one hour a week that belongs to you.

Many men use that hour in a practical way. They sort out what is theirs to carry and what they can hand back.

Some want to work out why saying no feels impossible. Others want help with sleep, temper or drinking first.

## Ways to *start*

You do not need the right words. "Everyone relies on me and I am running out" is a good first sentence.

If you live in England, you can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies without seeing a GP. You can also tell us what is going on, in whatever words come first.

If you have been telling yourself it is not bad enough yet, read [waiting until it gets serious](https://viacara.com/support/men/waiting-until-crisis/).
