# Parental and Carer Burnout

Parental burnout is measured in four dimensions and it is not depression. What the research says, and what unpaid carers in the UK report.

Parental burnout has its own measure and its own research. It is not workplace burnout carried home, and it is not depression.

The World Health Organization keeps the word burn-out for the job. Researchers studying parents went and built something separate instead.

Unpaid carers sit alongside parents here. They are counted differently in the UK, so this page keeps them apart.

## Four *dimensions*

Roskam and colleagues built the Parental Burnout Assessment from 901 parents. It measures four things.

- Exhaustion in the parental role
- A contrast with the parent you used to be
- Feeling fed up with the role
- Emotional distancing from your own children

The last one is the hardest to say out loud. It sits in the measure because parents reported it, not because anyone treats it as a verdict on them.

## Why the *role* is what gets measured

Every dimension names the parental role rather than the person. A parent can be emptied out by parenting and still function everywhere else.

Roskam's construct is role-specific by design. That is what separates it from a low mood which follows you everywhere. It is also why general advice about rest so often lands badly.

What the survey found about taking a break

## What carers *report*

Carers UK surveyed 12,500 unpaid carers and former carers in 2024. Of those who answered, 35% described their own mental health as bad or very bad.

That was 27% the year before.

The same survey found 57% feel overwhelmed often or always. Among those who did, 65% named being unable to take a break.

Only 23% had a carer's assessment in the previous 12 months. That is the statutory route to support in England, and most carers had not been through it.

This was a self-selected survey rather than a representative sample. It describes carers who chose to answer Carers UK, not every carer in the country.

## What *guilt* does here

Parental burnout carries a shame that job burnout does not. You are allowed to complain about work. Saying you have nothing left for your children is a different sentence.

That shame is why the emotional distancing dimension is hard to read. Parents said it first. Researchers wrote it down afterwards.

## What a professional can work with

A professional cannot give you more hours or a second pair of hands. They can work on the exhaustion, on the guilt and on what you have started telling yourself.

Ask whether they have worked with parents or carers before. The role needs understanding, not only the tiredness.

Practical help and emotional help are different needs. The services below cover the first kind, and a professional covers the second.
