# Autistic Burnout

Autistic burnout is more than masking. Cumulative load, lost skills, misdiagnosis and what the people who defined it say recovery takes.

Autistic burnout is not ordinary tiredness. Autistic adults and researchers defined it together in 2020.

Its features are chronic exhaustion, loss of skills and a reduced tolerance for things like noise and light. It typically runs three months or longer.

Masking is part of the story. It is not all of it, and this page is about the rest.

## More than *masking*

In 2024, researchers put burnout measures to 238 autistic adults. Burnout tracked strongly with depression, anxiety, stress and fatigue. Its link with camouflaging was only moderate.

Those are correlations rather than causes. What they rule out is masking as the whole explanation.

Our [masking and burnout page](https://viacara.com/support/neurodivergence/masking/masking-burnout-and-identity/) covers that route in full. What follows is what sits alongside it.

## What *builds* it

The 2020 study asked people what had caused theirs. The answer was accumulation, not any single event.

> because of life stressors that added to the cumulative load they experienced, and barriers to support that created an inability to obtain relief from the load. These pressures caused expectations to outweigh abilities

Both halves have to be present. Load builds up, and nothing lets it back out.

A 2022 model describes the same shape using the language built for work stress. Demands rise while resources drain away. Burnout sits in the gap between them.

The model leans on two established theories. One weighs demands against resources. The other says people act to protect the reserves they still hold.

What has to change before recovery starts

## Sensory load is *part* of it

The 2020 definition names reduced tolerance to stimulus as a core feature. Noise, light and touch get harder as burnout deepens.

No study has separated sensory load out as a cause in its own right. It appears in the definition as an effect, and we will not stretch that into more than it says.

## How *long* it lasts

Three months is the floor in the 2020 definition, not a forecast.

When 141 autistic adults were asked to confirm that definition, they agreed with the description. How long episodes run, and how often they return, is still unsettled.

Nobody has followed a group of autistic people through an episode and out of it. We would rather say so than give you an average nobody has measured.

## Being told it is something *else*

Many people in that 2023 study had been given a different explanation first. Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder all came up.

The wrong label can cost more than time. A 2021 definition built with autistic experts warns that depression treatment may make autistic burnout worse.

That does not make a depression diagnosis wrong. Many autistic people do have depression, and the two can run together.

Our page on [burnout or depression](https://viacara.com/support/burnout/burnout-or-depression/) sets out how contested that boundary is.

## What *recovery* takes

The 2022 model names protective factors alongside the risks. Its logic points one way. Demands have to fall, or resources have to rise.

That is one reason rest on its own often falls short. A week off lowers the demand for a week. It changes nothing about what is waiting afterwards.

The people who defined burnout also set out what helped them recover. Our [masking and burnout page](https://viacara.com/support/neurodivergence/masking/masking-burnout-and-identity/) carries that list in full.

## What a professional can *add*

A professional cannot lift the load off you. They can help you find where it is coming in, and work out which parts you can change.

Ask whether they have worked with autistic adults before. Ask what they would do differently if this turned out to be burnout rather than depression.

## Support that is *not* therapy

If a professional feels like too much right now, these are lighter places to start.
